What to do in Phu Quoc: Part 1

With the beach and the pool and the sun, what comes to mind as the first thing to do? For me, mellow out on a poolside recliner and read a good book may be one good option.

So what comes to mind? Old-school, traditional, resentful, Asian American, full of science - who else but Amy Tan (譚惠美), a very skillful writer on Chinese-American experience and mother-daughter relationship.

So I'm going to review one of her most famous work, The Joy Luck Club (喜鵲會), on the screen.  Though written many many years ago, it feels so relevant and addresses many of the issues facing our younger generation in HK these days. To know more, get the book or click here. I have grappled with many of these issues when I was young, so I know what it is. But I have let go. So it's an enjoyable but memorable experience, but certainly not an excruciating one. Have I actually addressed some of these experiences while I was visiting San Francisco and Oakland in 2018?

The Valley of Amazement (2013) was one of my favorites, as it was set in historical China and mimics some of the female characters I worked with in the past. To know more, read this here.

We are embracing some changes, with some benefiting more and some are at a disadvantage. I think I know what "cards" you guys are holding. Life is about "survival of the fittest", and not about bragging and nagging. If you want to leave a mark, do it in a way that's positive we can still feel your presence. I can help you speak a bit, but I'm not your savior and you shouldn't expect me to be. In the end, you need to be good on your own to rise to the top, if that's your goal. And expect intense competition and criticism.
